France faced Portugal on Friday night in one of the quarter finals of the competition and ended Ronaldo’s hopes of winning another trophy at his sixth attempt.

There were no goals after 120 minutes, but Les Bleus advanced to the semi finals after the ensuing penalty shoot-out.

Ronaldo scored during the shootout, but Joao Felix saw his effort come off the bar.

He wrote: “We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each and every one of you. For Portugal.

“We are grateful for all that you have given us and all that we have accomplished so far.

“On and off the field, I’m sure this legacy will be honoured and continue to be built. Together.”
