Cost of healthy food shoots up 110% amid nationwide hardship

Cost of healthy food shoots up 110% as food inflation climbs to 40.53%

Healthy food price per meal a day doubled 110.7 per cent to N1,035 in April 2024 against N491 year-on-year (YoY) in April 2023, according to the latest official data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“The National Average Cost of a Healthy Diet was N1,035 in April 2024. This is 5.4 per cent higher than the amount recorded in the previous month (March 2024, was N982)”, the NBS report said.

Ekiti notched the highest price at N1,483, followed by Ogun (N1,447), and Osun (N1,417). Kogi accounted for the lowest price at N709, trailed by Kaduna (N756), and Nasarawa (N769).

The NBS previously disclosed headline inflation surged to 33.69 per cent and food inflation 40.53 per cent in April.

President Bola Tinubu marked one year in office on May 29 amid gargantuan economic challenges, including soaring inflation and foreign exchange (forex) crisis.

Finance Minister Wale Edun has pledged Abuja will double its efforts to achieve food security in the next six months.
