Makinde mourns Afoja, says ex-Labour Minister’s death ‘shocking’

Makinde also commiserated with the former minister’s immediate family, the people of Oyo town, and the people of Oyo state

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has expressed shock over the passing of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Ajibola Afonja.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available to pressmen on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, by the governor’s Special Assistant on Print Media, Moses Alao.

TheNiche has earlier reported that Afonja, who was also a former Chairman of First Bank Plc, died on Sunday night at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan at 82.

His demise was confirmed on Monday by the Chairman of Oyo Global Forum, (OGF), Taiwo Adebayo.

According to him, the former minister and native of Oyo town, sustained injuries from a lone accident he was involved in at Ilora, a few kilometres from his country home.

He was thereafter rushed to UCH in Ibadan where he eventually gave up the ghost.

Reacting to the sad news, Makinde described Afonja as an illustrious son of Oyo State, who represented and promoted the state well.

He commiserated with the former minister’s immediate family, the people of Oyo town, and the people of the state.

He prayed to God to grant the soul of the deceased peaceful repose and stand by the family and the community he left behind.

Makinde said: “I received the news of the death of a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Prince Ajibola Afonja, with shock and sadness.

“Prince Afonja was a great ambassador of Oyo State, who promoted the state and made immense contributions to its growth.

“It is my prayer that God grant repose to his soul and grant him Aljana Firdausi.”
