Sources earlier told our reporter that the swearing-in was set for 4pm, but had to be moved slightly to allow the governor arrive Akure from his hometown where he had gone for the Christmas holiday.

Akeredolu died in a German hospital on Wednesday morning – an incident which had generated reactions and condolences from several quarters.

Akeredolu was flown days ago to German where he had spent three months of medical vacation between June and September 2023.

The governor was said to have battled leukemia until his death.

The 67-year-old politician returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany and only recently proceeded on another one after he was directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Aiyedatiwa.

His deputy, Aiyedatiwa, had been standing in as Acting Governor.

Aiyedatiwa’s walk to becoming the governor of Ondo State was a long one that lasted one year since Akeredolu suffered health challenges before he eventually succumbed to the claws of death on Wednesday.

Aiyedatiwa survived an impeachment plot by Akeredolu’s allies in the Ondo State House of Assembly.
