The newly-appointed Minister of Sports, John Enoh has disagreed with those accusing him of lobbying President Bola Tinubu for the job, insisting he was picked on merit.

The 57-year-old made this known recently, while responding to criticisms from some stakeholders that he is too inexperienced to handle the sports ministry.

Despite lacking a background in sports, Tinubu after sending his name to the senate for screening and confirmation, assigned him as Nigeria’s 36th Minister of Sports.

Enoh, who prior to the latest appointment has been practicing farming, however, insisted he is getting up to speed.

He went on to tell his detractors that since he was sent to the ministry by the president, he has been reading about sports and acquiring a lot of knowledge in the process.

Speaking to Daily Trust shortly after taking over, John Enoh said: “I didn’t lobby to be sports minister.

“President Bola Tinubu saw me fit and decided to put the task of building sports in Nigeria.

“Since I was assigned this portfolio, I have been reading about sports.”
