Football pundit and former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes has condemned the decision of German referee, Felix Zwayer to show a yellow card to Bruno Fernandes during Red Devil’s Europa game against Sevilla.

The Portugal international was booked by the center referee after a shot fired by Sevilla’s Nemanja Gudelj hit him on the arm.

The decision eventually proved costly as it would see the Portuguese midfielder miss the return leg of the double header European encounter in Spain.

Reacting to Zwayer’s decision to issue a yellow card to Fernandes, Man United legend, Scholes said the referee’s judgment was a harsh one

According to him, given the fact that the midfielder was a maximum of two yards away from the ball, there was no way he could have avoided it hitting his arm.

Scholes, who was furious with the referee, told BT Sport, “Ridiculous… I thought the referee was poor all night.

“Any sign of a foul, he couldn’t wait to get his yellow card out.”

He was not alone on this, former Three Lions midfielder and ex-United colleague, Owen Hargreaves agreed with Schole.

The former Man City star, while condemning the decision to book Fernandes, argued that it was not a card offence, because there was nothing he could do under the circumstances.

“It’s a ridiculous decision from the ref. What’s Bruno supposed to do? It’s not a yellow card at all.” Hargreaves said.

Man United, having drawn the first leg of the encounter 2-2 against Sevilla at Old Trafford, will travel to Spain on Thursday, April 20, for the return leg of the match.
