Obasanjo said he later told him he could contest the governorship seat, but he should not forget he reserved him for something bigger.

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed he was initially against the governorship ambition of Professor Charles Soludo in Anambra.

At an event on Saturday in Awka, Anambra State capital to mark the one-year anniversary of Soludo as governor of the state, Obasanjo said he had reservations when his former Chief Economic Adviser approached him that he wanted to be state governor.

Obasanjo said he envisioned Soludo as one who would be better at “something international or national” and not as Anambra governor.

He said, “Because of my experience with Chukwuma, I earmarked him for something greater in my mind, until one day he came to me and said he was going to contest election as governor of Anambra. I did not disguise my anger against him.

Obasanjo said he later told him he could contest the governorship seat, but he should not forget he reserved him for something bigger.

“But go for this governorship as an appetiser, then the main menu will come later. So, you are on your appetiser stage,” he said, turning to the governor.

Soludo was also former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria between 2004 and 2009, including when Obasanjo was president.
