BREAKING: Emefiele orders banks to comply with Buhari’s directive on old N200 note

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has instructed bank chief executives to commence disbursement of the old N200 notes to Nigerians.

Emefiele stated this hours after President Muhammadu Buhari informed of the government’s decision to allow the old N200 note to remain legal tender for 60 more days.

According to reporting by Nation Newspaper, Emefiele met with operators of commercial banks, instructing them to start implementation of the presidential instruction.

Emefiele, who was at the presidential villa on Thursday afternoon for a meeting with Buhari and some other stakeholders, including an ad-hoc House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on Naira re-design/Cashless policy and currency swap, said he already met with 15 bank executives on how to ease the cash crisis.

He assured that the old N200 note will be made available with immediate effect.

He appealed to Nigerians to allow the policy to work, saying it will go a long way to help the nation’s economy.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday announced that the old N200 notes will remain legal tender until April 10, 2023.

Buhari stated this during an address to Nigerians, apologising to all for the difficulties experienced in accessing the scarce new naira notes.

The President said the old N500 and N1,000 notes stopped being legal tender on February 10, adding that they can be returned only through the Central Bank of Nigeria.
