Tinubu has SDP alliance in the bag, but a faction rejects deal

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

Social Democratic Party (SDP) National Secretary Alfa Muhammad has affirmed an alliance with All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu despite the rejection of such a deal by the SDP faction led by Jerry Gana.

“The much trumpeted Tinubu-SDP proposed alliance deal is real and unstoppable,” Muhammad said in a statement issued in Abuja in which he also dismissed the Gana faction as irrelevant.

“It is a plan ‘B’ option conceived since year 2020 by the authentic leaders of the SDP, to make sure that Nigerians never miss the treasure of having Asiwaju Tinubu as their next President.

“The agenda, which is known and popular amongst the elected (not appointed)  national executive  members of the SDP and stakeholders is not well known to the denying Jerry Gana boys, because they are strangers who joined the party just ‘yesterday’ along with Jerry Gana who has since returned to PDP but stayed behind to allegedly destabilise our party, and thus knows little or nothing about the party’s structures and agenda.”

Muhammad advised the public to ignore the Gana faction, saying its fake claim to the SDP leadership would soon be put to an end by the Federal High Court.

“We will address Nigerians on the subject fully shortly,” he added, per The PUNCH.

The APC and Tinubu have also announced plans to strike alliance with other smaller parties to boost his chances in the presidential race.

Atiku mulling alliance with 11 parties ’cos of G5 snub

Atiku Abubakar too has confirmed through a surrogate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is holding talks with 11 other parties for a working alliance, to enable him win the presidential vote on 25 February in spite of the G5.

Atiku is trying to cobble up support from other flanks after his snub by the PDP G5 Governors – Nyesom Wike (Rivers) Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

The G5 say they will not support him because he backs Iyorchia Ayu to remain as PDP National Chairman, a post they insist should rotate to the South.

News of the alliance broke after the PDP held similar ones with the APC and some smaller parties, according to PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi.

“There are a good number of them, but it will not be wise to publicly list them out. At the last time I checked, we were in talks with over 11 of them.

“They approached us to express their willingness to partner with us towards ensuring credible elections in 2023. That is the way they put it, but you and I know what that means,” Abdullahi said.

“These are parties with candidates who are not strong enough. I can confirm to you that there is a working arrangement, and we want to see more of such parties or groups. Together, we will salvage this country.

“They know the strength of the PDP and the pedigree of its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.”
