Orsato, according to Modric, did not award Croatia a corner kick but awarded a rather dubious penalty to Argentina during the semi-final tie

Real Madrid and Croatia midfield maestro, Luka Modric, has said his side lost the World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Tuesday night because the centre referee, Daniele Orsato, made some poor calls.

According to Modric, Orsato did not award Croatia a corner kick and awarded a rather dubious penalty to Argentina during the tie.

A goal from Messi and a brace from Julian Alvarez gave Argentina a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Croatia at the Lusail Stadium.

Modric, while speaking at his post-match press conference, argued that his team were on top at the beginning of the match but a few wrong calls from the referee changed the match in favour of Argentina.

He said, “It wasn’t to be, but hey, we have to recover and try to win the match for third place. We are sad, we wanted to be in another final. We have to congratulate Argentina.

The Real Madrid star further added, “We were fine, controlling the game and this corner that the referee didn’t give us and the penalty, which for me wasn’t one, changed everything. The Argentine shoots and collides with our goalkeeper, he goes for him, I can’t believe he gave that penalty.

“This changes the game a bit. But we can’t change it, we have to recover and try to win the next game.”
