Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai, the United Arab Emirate (UAE) in June 2020, over an extensive fraudulent scheme that has robbed victims of their money in the U.S., Qatar, the United Kingdom, and other countries.

He was extradited to the U.S, where he was charged with fraud and money laundering.

In July 2021, Abbas pleaded guilty to the charges; he also admitted to conspiring with multiple persons within and outside the U.S to launder the proceeds of the fraudulent scheme perpetrated against persons and businesses in different countries.

He went on to apologise to his family and commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a job well done.

However, on September 19, Judge Otis Wright after initially rejecting the plea of the defendant for a delay of judgement, eventually fixed Hushpuppi’s sentencing to November 3.

He was finally sentenced to 11 years in jail but will now spend only nine years in prison as he had already spent two years behind bars.
