NYSC sanctions errant corps members, enforces zero tolerance for truancy

Four National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Batch C Stream 1 are to repeat their service year in Bauchi and the service year of 27 others will be extended for at least three weeks for misconduct.
State NYSC Coordinator Namadi Abubakar made the disclosure in Bauchi during the collection of discharge certificates by corps members.
He said the 31 were sanctioned for abscondment, absenteeism, and other misconduct during their service year.
Abubakar reiterated the NYSC has zero tolerance for truancy and would punish errant corps member.
He announced five of the1,151 corps members who passed out would be given state award honour for their outstanding contribution that uplifted the living standards of their host communities through Community Development Service (CDS) projects.

Contribution to national development
In line with the mission of the NYSC to contribute to national development, Abubakar said, a high number of corps medical personnel were posted to rural areas of Bauchi which has helped in addressing the shortage of healthcare workers.
He explained the corps medical personnel, through the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), have assisted thousands of rural community residents across the state, per reporting by ThisDay.
To contribute to educational development in the state, he added, a number of corps members were also posted to schools to teach.
Abubakar urged “the outgoing corps members to continue to be good ambassadors of the scheme and also maximise the skills acquisition and entrepreneurship learnt during their service year.”
NYSC requests Gowon’s backing for its Trust Fund
Yakubu Gowon was approached by the NYSC in June to help create a Trust Fund for the young graduates’ scheme he established 49 years ago as military Head of State when he himself was 31.
NYSC Director General Mohammed Fadah, a Brigadier General, solicited the support of Gowon, now 87, to help create the Fund to expand the scope of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
The Gowon junta established the NYSC by decree Number 24 of 22 May 1973 “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity” after the Civil War.
The proposed NYSC Fund also seeks to empower more corps members to establish their vocational businesses, Fadah said when he paid a visit to Gowon at his office in Abuja.
He enthused the Fund would reduce unemployment among graduates and make them self-reliant in the face of scarce white collar jobs.
