NPFL: Rangers boost chase for continental spot

-

Rangers got a boost to their continental football chase after forcing MFM FC to a 0-0 draw in a MatchDay 26 game of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Playing at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, the Flying Antelopes were hoping to complete a double over the hosts after their 2-0 win in the reverse fixture, but getting a point did not come easy.

The spectators at the stadium had to wait until the 33rd minute before seeing the first real chance when Oladayo Alabi set up Moses Shodeinde, but the connection counted for nothing.

Rangers rarely troubled their host in the first forty-five minutes, but MFM was unable to get a goal either.

In the second half, Rangers stepped up their attacking play, but it was MFM who got better chances, particularly from set-piece situations.

The final one was the closest, Oladayo Alabi’s 89th-minute free-kick was spectacularly saved by Rangers’ goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu who ensured that spoils were shared in the encounter.

Rangers are 4th at the moment with 42 points, just one adrift of Remo Stars who are third on the log with twelve games to go.

MFM meanwhile have played 25 games, but remains bottom of the log with 24 points, though they are still in a position to avoid beating the drop if they can avoid dropping further points in the next few games.

Up next for MFM is a trip to Abia Warriors, while Rangers play host to Heartland in another Oriental Derby.
