Warnock acknowledged the difficulty Chelsea will face at the Santiago Bernabeu but argued Tuchel gave up too easily even before the return leg

Former Middlesbrough manager, Neil Warnock, has slammed Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, for giving up after his team lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The Blues fell to Benzema’s hat-trick and got a solitary goal from Kai Havertz, needing at least two unreplied goals to take the double-header encounter to penalties when they meet next week.

However, speaking after his side’s defeat, Tuchel asserted in his post-match press conference that the tie is effectively over and that his team will get ‘hammered’ in Spain next week.

But Warnock has now hit out at Tuchel over his post-match comments, tagging it the ‘worst interview’ the former Paris Saint-Germain coach has given since arriving at Chelsea.

He acknowledged that it is now a difficult task given the scoreline but insisted the German should not put the ‘white flag up’ before the return fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“That is probably the worst I have heard from Tuchel in an interview since he has been at Chelsea,” Warnock told talkSPORT.

“I didn’t sense that he believed that he could turn it around. I think the players have got to have the manager talking as if they can believe in him and I don’t think it was a good vibe last night.

“I know it’s 3-1 and it is almost impossible, but if you have seen these games, turn on some silly coin and a goal early doors so you can’t just put the white flag up.

“He didn’t sound good last night.”
