The Group Managing Director of the NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, has apologised to Nigerians over the importation of toxic fuel, which caused the current scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across major cities in the country.

Kyari, who appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream investigating the importation of adulterated fuel, said NNPC was not aware of the presence of methanol in the fuel imported.

He said the loading terminal from where the fuel was brought into the country has been supplying gasoline for a very long time, pointing out they have been a major terminal supplying fuel to not only West Africa but to many countries in Europe.

Kyari assured that the NNPC Limited was doing everything possible to ensure that fuel supply across the country is normalised, asking Nigerians to avoid panic buying of fuel.

There has been fuel scarcity in many parts of the country since Monday following the discovery of the importation of adulterated products. The product in question is said to contain high concentration of Sulphur, making it harmful to engines and accessories.

In a bid to mitigate the crisis occasioned by the situation, the federal government has stated that the adulterated fuel has been withdrawn from the market, assuring that supplies would be normalized soon.
