Herdsmen kill ten, raze houses in Plateau

  • Herdsmen, again, wreak havoc in a community in Plateau State

Ten persons were reportedly killed in the early hours of Friday by suspected herdsmen at Te’egbe village of Miangi District in Rigwe Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The herdsmen killed two persons in an ambush last Tuesday at Ancha village of Miango district, Rigwe Chiefdom of Bassa LGA.

It was gathered herdsmen launched the latest attack around 2:00 am in the community during which ten persons were reportedly killed.

The rampaging herdsmen also reportedly set ablaze houses during the invasion.

Plateau Police spokesman ASP Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the attack on phone.

He said: “We are aware of the incident and we shall brief you”.

But several calls to the Military Information Officer of the Operation Safe Haven, Major Ishaku Takwa, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Governor Simon Lalong condemned the incident.

Lalong, in a statement by his spokesman, Dr. Makut Simon Macham, said: “The persistent attacks in this general area remain condemnable and unacceptable to Government.

“As such, no resources and efforts will be spared in painstakingly following up on the trail of those who derive joy in attacking and killing innocent citizens and destroying their homes and means of livelihoods.”

He directed the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Peace Building Agency (PBA) to immediately visit the area and assess the level of damage with a view to carrying out immediate intervention and bringing succour to people who are in need as a result of the barbaric attack.

No fewer than 12 persons were killed on Sunday, June 13 by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Kushe community and in Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

It was gathered that the killing took place at about 9:30pm when suspected Fulani herdsmen stormed the community and shot sporadically.

Among the casualties were three women and men while five persons survived the attack with gunshots injuries.

It was learned that most of the victims were taken unaware as many were returning home while some were in their sleep.

Member representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos, wept when he sighted the corpses.

“We are tired of the continued killings in my constituency without any help. Government must rise up to its responsibility of protecting lives and property.

“I, therefore, urge my people to defend themselves because government has failed in their responsibility of defending the people,” he said then.
