Victor Osimhen, others, assure Nigerians of better outing in AFCON

Victor Osimhen and other Super Eagles players have assured their fans of better performance during the Nations Cup next year

Super Eagles players have promised Nigerians that they will up their game at the forthcoming 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

They gave the assurances after the nervy draw against The Sharks of Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Tuesday, November 16, 2020. 

Although the draw was good enough to qualify them for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifying play-offs, how they laboured to secure the 1-1 draw left much to be desired.

Fans and pundits have questioned the technical depth of Super Eagles coach,  Gernot Rohr, with some of them demanding his sack by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

However, some Super Eagles players who spoke after the encounter have assured the fans that they will put up a better showing going forward.

Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, who won the man the match in the game against Cape Verde said they approached the match cautiously because they needed to qualify, and promised improved performance in the future, as he said: 

” The win was important for us and that’s the first step. We hope to do better in our next game.”

Osimhen also added: “We have the quality to get through to the World Cup,”

Alanyaspor defender Chidozie Awaziem, who starred in the uninspiring game, said, “We will improve our game.

“We know the fans were not happy with the performance, but we will improve.”

Eagles and Nantes winger Moses Simon added,” It was a tough game for us but we know where to improve and get better.”

The draw for the playoffs have been scheduled by FIFA and CAF to hold on Eagles on December 18, 2021, Eagles will know their opponent after the event.  

Gernot Rohr’s side being one of the top five seeded teams in Africa alongside Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. may get an encounter with old foes, Cameroon or Ghana, who are part of the five unseeded teams.
