Senate confirms two nominees as RMAFC Commissioners

Receives request from Buhari to confirm Omotayo as DG NIPPS

The Senate has confirmed the nominations of Hon. Abdulazeez Idris King and Engr. Mohammed Sani Baba as Federal Commissioners of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). This comes on the heels of the upper legislative house receiving formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm Professor Ayo C. Omotayo as Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State.

The confirmation of both nominees followed the consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs.

The nominees are to represent Kogi and Bauchi states, respectively, on the Commission.

In his presentation, Chairman of the Committee on National Planning and Economic Affairs, Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi, said based on available documents and presentations made to the Committee during the screening exercise, the nominees satisfied the requirements for appointment into public service.

The confirmation of the nominees was duly in accordance with the provision of Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, in a short remark, congratulated both nominees on their confirmation by the upper chamber.

The request for Omotayo’s confirmation was contained in a letter read on Tuesday during plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, moments after the chamber resumed plenary from its eighteen working days recess.

The Senate had adjourned plenary on October 13, 2020, to enable Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government to defend their respective budget estimates for the year 2022 before the relevant Committees of the National Assembly.

President Buhari in the letter sought the confirmation of Professor Ayo Omotayo as Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in accordance with the Section 5(2) of the NIPSS Act 2004.

The letter was titled: “Request for confirmation of appointment of Prof. Ayo C. Omotayo PhD as Director General, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).”

It reads: “In accordance with the provision of Section 5 subsection 2 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Act 2004, I write to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Prof. Ayo C. Omotayo as Director-General, National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

 “The nominee’s CV is attached herewith.

 “It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.”
