Shariah court denies Kano cleric bail. Faces death sentence for blasphemy

-

Controversial Muslim Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara has been denied bail by an Upper Kano State Shariah Court.

Kabara was arraigned before the Shariah Court for disparaging Islam most revered prophet, Muhammed, and his companions.

The cleric, famous for his controversial religious commentaries, was charged with blasphemy on Friday, July 16.

He has remained in prison custody since then.

In today’s sitting, September 30, Kabara’s defence team led by Muhammad Umar, applied for his bail on the ground that his family was facing difficulties as a result of his absence.

The defence counsel added that if the accused person is granted bail, he can have time to defend himself properly.

But Suraj Saida, leading the defence team, objected, noting that the offence carries capital punishment and is not bailable under the law except in exceptional circumstances.

The presiding judge, Ibrahim Sarki Yola, denied Kabara bail on the ground that no circumstances warranted that.

The court adjourned to October 14, 2021.
