Buhari approves specialized universities for health, technology

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved two specialised new universities for technology and health for the country, according Permanent Secretary, federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono.

The president also approves N4 billion for the new university of technology to take off, while the university of health is given N5 billion. The money will be drawn from TETFund.

The Health university will be cited in Azare,Bauchi State, while the university will be located in Ila Orangun, Osun State.

The president also gives approval for the establishment of National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Abuja with campuses in all the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Echono also disclosed that the president approved that four existing Universities of Technology located in Yola, Akure, Owerri and Minna be upgraded and equipped.

He said: “The two new Universities of Technology will be established in 2021 while the upgrade of the existing four Universities of Technology and the National Institute of Technology will come on stream next year,” he said.

The permanent secretary said the NIT will be patterned after similar institutions in Singapore and Malaysia to serve essentially as a postgraduate centre devoted to research and innovation, drawing the best graduates from the six Universities of Technology, as well as other exceptional graduates from reputable universities within and outside Nigeria.
