The former Governor of Anambra State and PDP’s Vice Presidential candidate in 2019 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has disclosed that the extensive poverty mapping carried out in the state under his administration, was to discover the perculiar needs of the people, which helped in delivering good governance to the people.

The former governor spoke on a Webinar Colloquium themed, “Poverty Challenges in Nigeria.”

Obi explained that the poverty mapping, which was carried out in all local governments of the state, enabled them to discover the specific needs of the people in remote areas of the state.

His words: “We immediately discovered that good access roads were a major problem facing these areas, so we embarked on massive roads construction to connect even the remote areas of to the urban area of the State.

“We did more roads in the rural areas than we did in the urban areas.

“We further invested heavily in education, which moved us from our educationally backward position to to the point that Anambra became the best in WAEC and NECO exams.

“In the health sector, we equally invested aggressively. Before we came into office, there was no single School of Nursing or Midwifery. By the time we left office, we had set up about 12 Schools of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Technology.”

He pointed out that if government could put measures in place to combat poverty, Nigeria would be rid of many societal vices like banditry, kidnapping, robbery etc plaguing it.
