Army, SSS, police storm Abakaliki market in search of arms

-

A phalanx of the Nigerian Army, State Security Services (SSS) and the police have sealed up the Abakaliki Building Materials Market, allowing no entry nor exit since 9 am today, December 17.

The mission of the security agents, according to media reports, was to intercept a cache of arms stock in the market for shipment to other parts of the country.

The Nation newspaper said the security cordon also affected Afikpo road, which is the main entrance to Abakaliki, the state’s capital, forcing motorists to take alternate routes.

The newspaper quoted a top security source who said the operation was based on the discovery of a cache of ammunition in the market.
