26-yr-old businessman bags two years jail term for trafficking

Justice Ayokunle Faji  of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Nigeria on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man, Muhammed Muhammed, to  two years imprisonment for peddling 25.5 kg of Cannabis sativa alias Hemp.

The convict was charged before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on one count of drug trafficking.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the prosecutor, Mr Jeremiah Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case before the court.

While reviewing the facts of the case, the prosecutor tendered some documents in evidence, such as a written statement of the defendant, a drug analysis form, a request for scientific aid form, as well as remnant of the narcotics.

The court admitted the evidences and marked them as exhibits, accordingly.

Prosecution then urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant based on his plea and the evidences of prosecution.

Consequently,  the court convicted the defendant.

In his verdict, the judge sentenced the convict to a term of two years imprisonement to begin from the date of his arrest.

According to the charge, the prosecutor, told the court that the convict was arrested on July 7.

He said that the convict was aprehended at Igbirra Street in the Idi-Araba area of Lagos, while trading on cannabis.

According to  the prosecutor, “cannabis is a banned narcotics similar to Heroine and other restricted hard drugs which are listed as being prohibited in the NDLEA schedule.

The offence of drug trafficking contravenes the provisions of Sections 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.

During his plea for mercy, the convict had begged the court to be lenient with him,  promising that he would no longer engage in crime.
