Nigerians have resisted some operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) from effecting arrest of a trader at the Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos State, barely 48 hours after they were banned from carrying out low risk police duties.
The operatives, dressed in mufti attire and wielding guns, where booed by other traders who came out in their hundreds screaming ‘no more SARS.’
TheNiche had reported on October 4 that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, banned SARS from carrying out low risk police duties like patrol, stop and search and effecting arrest of low key criminals.
“The inspector-general of police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has banned the personnel of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and other Tactical Squads of the Force including the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Anti-Cultism Squad and other Tactical Squads operating at the Federal, Zonal and Command levels, from carrying out routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties – stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, traffic checks, etc – with immediate effect.”
“They are to concentrate and respond only to cases of armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes when the need arises.”
But less than 48 hours after the order, SARS operatives stormed the busy Lagos Computer Village in Ikeja in complete violation of the IGP’s order.
