A personnel of the Nigerian Army has been seen on a video brutally flogging a naked man to elicit confession.
The video, posted by an online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, reveals the sadistic nature of the torturer who lashes the cane with such ease.
The video ran for three minutes, fifty five seconds, and during that time, the flogging did not stop. At least, 30 strokes of the cane were delivered on the naked body of the victim during the duration of the video. It is not known how long the torture lasted.
Even when the stick which was used for the flogging broke, the soldier simply requested for another one from his colleague. He continued landing the stick on his victim’s naked body, while telling him to confess. The victim, who was muttering sounds in pain, told his torturer repeatedly “If I do am I for don talk.”
The incident, according to Sahara Reporters, happened in Ondo’s riverine area. There was no further details revealing why the torture was being meted to the man.
In the video, the colleagues of the soldier were moving around the scene of the torture with indifference to the plight of the victim.
The video also showed another woman sitting helplessly close to the man being beaten as if she was also waiting for her turn to also be tortured.
In Nigeria, torture is illegal, but it is observed in the breach. The Nigerian Constitution prohibits torture and other inhuman or degrading treatment in section 34(1) of the constitution which states that: “Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person, and accordingly, (a) no person shall be subjected to torture, or to inhuman or degrading treatment.”
The constitutional provision against torture seems to suggest that the truth can be unraveled without resorting to torture. But agencies of government seem to think otherwise.
In the comment section of Sahara Reporters twitter handle, a twitter user showed another video of a man decked a military uniform who was flogging his victim inside a gutter filled with dirty water and trash.
@HQNigerianArmy has not responded to both videos which were shared on its twitter handle.
