Nigeria police crush fuel price, electricity tariff protest hike in Lagos

The Nigeria Police in Lagos have dispersed and arrested protesters of fuel price increment and electricity tariff hike in Nigeria’s commercial city, Lagos.

The protesters, who gathered at the Ojuelegba area of Lagos State this morning, September 10, were subdued by a phalanx of police operatives who also arrested journalists in the process.

According to a tweet from the twitter handle of an online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, among the journalists arrested were those of its medium, Punch and Premium Times. The police men, it was gathered, bundled them inside a waiting truck in which the protesters were herded.

The protest was called by the Socialist Party of Nigeria to protest against the fuel price hike and electricity tariff increase.

According to the tweet, over 20 members of the Socialist Party of Nigeria were also arrested at the protest ground.

On September 2, the Nigerian government announced increment of fuel price from N145 to N162, and electricity tariff was jerked up beyond 100 per cent.

President Muhammadu Buhari says there is no going back to the increment.
