Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has said that the fuel increment announced by the Nigerian government on September 2, makes no sense to him at a time the international price of crude oil is on a fallen slope.

The federal government said the increment was as a result of the removal of subsidy, which then triggered the fuel price to rise from N145 to N162. The increment also coincided with the hike in electricity tariff by more than 100 per cent.

In a tweet, Atiku said it was unreasonable for the price of fuel to be fallen globally but rising in Nigeria.

“I am a businessman. I look at things from an economic perspective. Questions beg answers. The price of crude is down from where it was in 2019. In the US and Europe, fuel prices are far lower than they were in 2019. If we truly deregulated, shouldn’t fuel price have dropped?” he queried.

Atiku had on September 3, said he rejected the increment in the price of fuel, but got trolled by Nigerians who asked him to lead a protest against the hike. He never responded, until the latest tweet which he queried the rationale for the increment.
