Assistant superintendents of police (ASP) promoted in December 2013 are not happy with the authorities for withholding their promotion allowances for 12 months.
They were elevated from the post of inspector, and were due for salary increment to reflect their new ranks in January 2014. But that did not happen until January 2015 when they were paid as ASPs.
“I was promoted on 31 December 2013. I was promoted with about 5,000 other officers. From January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2014, our promotion allowances were not paid.
“It was from January 1, 2015 they started paying us ASP salary,” one of the officers who pleaded anonymity told TheNiche.
Others also confirmed that their 2014 promotion allowances have not been paid.
“From January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2014 they paid us inspector salaries, even though we are ASPs.
“During the political campaign, former President Goodluck Jonathan promised to pay us the allowances. But after the election, nobody talked about that again,” another source lamented.
The difference in salary between senior inspector and ASP is about N40,000.
“I am being owed about N480,000. We were paid inspector salaries in 2014 instead of ASP salaries. They held it for one year,” the source added.
“IGs (inspectors general) have been coming and going, nobody talks about the allowances. Some other men of the force are being owed also. Some rank and file have not been paid the allowances of their promotion.”
On what may be the reason for the nonpayment of 2014 promotion allowances, he said: “In short, I don’t know. After about three months into our new rank, we applied for Advance to Change.
“When you apply for Advance to Change, it is the duty of the command to send the nominal roll of those affected to Force Headquarters, and they will release the money and pay.
“I wouldn’t know why we have not been paid. The only person that can answer this question is the IG (inspector general of police) or the Police Service Commission (PSC).”
Attempts to get the reaction of the police authorities were unsuccessful.
A member of the PSC, Comfort Obi, did not respond to enquiries from TheNiche.
