The people of Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State have embarked on protest over Governor Abubakar Sani Bello’s decision to appoint his 2019 campaign director, Alhaji Suleiman Yusuf, as commissioner representing the area.
The name of the campaign director, it was gathered, was among the 17 nominated by Governor Bello last week for the approval of the state House of Assembly.
It would be recalled that last week the governor submitted 17 names as commissioner-nominees to the Assembly to be screened.
The protesters, who stormed the Government House, Minna were allegedly prevented from gaining entrance by security agents.
But they said that they had better candidates in Agaie to represent them at the state cabinet, but not Yusuf.
They said, “We have more competent, reliable, acceptable and knowledgeable candidates who could carry everybody along. We are calling on the Governor to immediately make a reversal of the apointee .”
The protesters insisted that Yusuf cannot represent them as 80% of the population of Agaie are not in support of him, while describing him as a person that does cares about his people or area.
But, in another breath, an APC stakeholder in Agaie, Hon. Aliyu Abdulmalik, debunked the claims of the protesters, claiming that relevant stakeholders in the area were fully behind the campaign director due to his transparency.
Speaking to journalists in Minna at the weekend, he said the protest was stage-managed, arguing, “we the people of Agaie are well pleased with the nomination of Suleiman Yusuf. He deserved the appointment”.
