Bawa emerges Niger speaker

Members of Niger State House of Assembly have elected Mr. Abdullahi Bawa as their Speaker.

    Bawa, a first-term member, was nominated by the immediate past speaker, Ahmed Marsha Guni.

  Before his election, other contestants said to have eyed the seat were the former speaker, Ahmed Marafa, Chanchaga constituency, Madaki Malik Bosso of Bosso constituency and Shuibu Liman Iyah of Suleja constituency.

    Meanwhile, Iyah was not sworn in due to a pending court case.

  Iyah is in a legal tussle with Hon. Mohammed Badaru over the seat.

Bawa was born in 1963 in Sabon-Wuse and a Barrister at law.

  He was a former chairman of Tafa Local Government Area and also served as commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Niger State in the administration of former Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of the People’s Demoncratic Party, PDP,.

  Bawa dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Party, APC; contested and won to represent his constituency.

  Also, a member representing Bida 1, Hon. Bako Kassim Alfa, emerged as the deputy speaker.

  Alfa is a second-term member, who was born in 1960.

  The deputy speaker also served as the education committee chairman of the last assembly.

The duo were sworn in by the Clerk of the Assembly, Abdullahi Mohammed Kagara.
