He said: “We are proud of the team for making us happy. They did us proud and we salute their efforts and courage.

“But it is not over until it is over. They’ve now qualified for the next stage of the competition and they must keep on fighting until they win the trophy.”

Chief Operating Officer of the LMC, Salihu Abubakar, urged the players and officials of Warri Wolves to put behind them the feat in Ethiopia, but square up for the next task at hand.

His words: “They should put that feat behind them and set in motion machinery for the next assignment.

“They must continue to fight for the trophy. We are proud of them. We are happy they did us proud, but there is still more matches to go.”

Warri Wolves emerged the last Glo Premier League club standing in CAF inter-club competitions after Kano Pillars and Enyimba crashed out in the CAF Champions League.

The fourth Nigerian club, Dolphins, had earlier been disqualified from the CAF Confederation Cup following their failure to keep to time for their match at Club Africain in Tunisia.

Wolves gave Nigeria something to cheer, as it held on to its two-goal lead from the first leg to edge out Dedebit FC of Ethiopia.

Once again, Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, was the hero in a tough performance for Wolves in Addis Ababa. Akpeyi saved a pointblank effort in the first half. He continued with a superb second half performance that saw him pull off saves after saves to keep Dedebit at bay and ensure the match ended goalless.

Wolves have now progressed to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup and will meet FC MK Etancheite of DR Congo.

The Warri club will host the first leg on Saturday, April 18, while the return leg takes place in Kinshasa on the weekend of May 1-3.
