Legal luminary and foremost Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof Ben Nwabueze, has warned the self-determination group, the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) against boycotting the 2019 general election.
Nwabueze’s admonition is coming on the heels of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s call to followers to boycott the polls.
Kanu who recently resurfaced in Israel announced on Sunday in a broadcast that there would be no election in the Southeast in 2019.
He also said he would return soon to Nigeria to revive the agitation for Biafra independence. His whereabouts had been unknown since July 2017 when the military launched Operation Python Dance to check activities of IPOB.
But in a terse press statement titled, “Nnamdi Kanu’s call to boycott the 2019 general election,” Prof Nwabueze said a boycott would be suicidal.
“My stand on the boycott of election is that it is a suicidal mistake. For this reason I am totally opposed to it, and have repeatedly advised against it,” Nwabueze said in the statement he emailed to TheNiche on Monday.
