Human rights activist and national delegate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Convention slated for Saturday, June 23, 2018, Tunji Abayomi, has said that there was no cause for alarm over fears of parallel delegates at the convention.
His reason: “The party leadership has the capacity to handle it”.
Abayomi told The Niche exclusively that there was nothing to fear about as the development was natural in politics.
“I don’t think that the emergence of any parallel group will pose a problem or something to brood about. Such development is normal and expected in political party politics.
“Nigerians should not be distracted by any of such developments. What is important, rather, is the ability of the party leadership to tackle or handle the matter and I am sure the APC leadership is expected to handle the matter with the due process it requires and they will rise to the challenge.
“The party leadership will be expected to handle any fallout and I am confident that if there is any, the leadership we have has the ability to address the matter adequately to the satisfaction of all”.
It will be recalled that APC had in May held congresses across the states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); and in many places, two sets of executive emerged.
As the ruling party plans to hold its national convention on Saturday, there are fears that parallel delegates from across the states may storm the Eagle Square in Abuja.
The states where factions of the party worked at cross-purposes include Lagos, Kwara, Kano, Kaduna, Kogi, Delta, Rivers, Enugu, Ondo, Ebonyi, Sokoto, Bayelsa, Oyo, and Zamfara with party members saying there were issues in no fewer than 24 states.
The development has heightened tension that both factions of the party would go to Abuja with their delegates to elect national officers who would steer the affairs of the party through the 2019 elections and beyond.
