CBN educates students on financial literacy

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday in Abuja taught secondary school students in the FCT on the importance of savings as part of financial literacy campaign.

 

 

The schools involved were Government Junior Secondary School Wuse Zone 3 and Government Secondary School Garki.

Mr Adebayo Adelabu, Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, said the idea was to empower the youth for proper financial management in the future.

He spoke on the topic: “Growing your money.”

 

 

He said the event was part of activities marking the global money that focused on educating the youth in proper financial management as future leaders.

 

 

“The objective of the CBN is also to make sure that the country gets richer and that is why the focus is on the youth,” he said.

 

 

He advised the students to cultivate the habit of savings early in life and also to invest.

 

 

Adelabu named various ways they could invest to include in shares, stocks, properties, bonds.

 

 

“You must ensure that you save your money in banks,” he said.

 

 

The Deputy Director, Consumer Protection Department, Hajia Kazeem Hadijat, said the event was to ensure that the children were properly guided in the issues of money management.

 

 

“Under financial literacy, we want to educate them; we want them to imbibe saving habit so that when they grow up they will carry on with the habit.

 

 

“This will make them to become strong members of the society because they will be able to control their financial decision.’’

 

 

She added that the idea of a Governor or Deputy Governor teaching the student was to mentor them and also for them to aspire great and see the need to learn well in school.

 

 

Miss Chinaza Oduozo, a JSS three student, commended the CBN for making out time to come and teach them.

 

 

“Today, I have leant how to keep my money and how to go about getting insurance cover while investing.

 

 

“I have also learnt that I should always save for the rainy days and save with a financial home.’’

 

 

Also, Akinwale Biodun, another JSS three student, said: “I learnt a lot today; one of it is how to save my money and make my money grow for future use.

 

 

“I say a big thank you to CBN; I really appreciate the lesson,’’ he added.
