Alhaji Ibrahim Gero, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 7, 000 members of the party in Yobe have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking on behalf of the defectors at a campaign rally on Monday in Karasuwa, Gero said he and his colleagues dumped APC out of the desire for better leadership in the state.
Gero, who also the former chairman of the council, added that the people of Yobe were yearning for good governance that would address infrastructure deficits.
He added that the people also yearned for leadership that would address the high level of idleness among the youth which was threatening peaceful coexistence in the state.
“I want to use this medium to officially announce our resolution to withdraw our membership of APC and join PDP together with 7,000 members and supporters,“ Gero said.
Responding, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the PDP in the state, Malam Sule Doguwa, said that the party had become more strong and united, and stood better chance to win the general elections.
Contributing, the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Alhaji Adamu Waziri, pledged to ensure transparency and accountability in governance at levels of government, if voted.
Waziri further promised that his administration would initiate peace forum to enable aggrieved members of the society ventilate their grievances with a view to mitigating conflicts in the state.
The governorship candidate urged PDP supporters to collect their Permanent Voters Cards, to enable them vote for the leadership that would better their living condition.
