auchi Emir tasks clerics, monarchs on girl-child education

The Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, has urged traditional and religious leaders in Nigeria to give 100 per cent support to the girl-child education.

Suleiman Adamu gave the advice in Bauchi on Wednesday during the 2017 International Day of the Girl-Child organised by High Level Womeilr n Advocates (HILWA) and the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) with support from UNICEF D field office Bauchi with the theme, “The Power of the Adolescent Girls: Vision 2030.”

The Emir who was represented by the Chief Iman of Bauchi Central mosque, Alhaji Bala Baba Inna, said that the era of relegating the girl-child education was over, noting that no religion permits making the girl-child  less important to the boy-child.

“Every child is a gift from Allah  and they all have equal right to education and other rights,” he said.

Suleiman Adamu said that recent statistics showed that the population of girls in the country put at 60 per cent against population of boys at 40 per cent and it showed that the education of the girl-child must not be taken for granted.

He commended the efforts of  the Bauchi State government, and international partners like UNICEF towards in improving the girl-child education.

The Emir also assured that his emirate  would continue to  promote education of children in Bauci State, particulary the girl-child education.

He commended the effortsof SUBEB in ensuring that the girl-child is not left behind in any area of life.

Also, UNICEF Education Specialist, Hajia Maryama Dikwa, said that UNICEF dedicated this year’s international day of the girl-child to girls at emergency states in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.

She said that UNICEF has be planning with the parents of girls at emergency centre and as well as responding to their emergency situation.

Dikwa lamented that some of the girls in the emergency centre had suffered domestic abuse while others had been raped.

She called on all stakeholders to support and empower girls in emergency centre to alleviate their suffering and enable them have a brighter future.

According to Dikwa, out of 32 percent girl-child that are out of school in Nigeria , 26 percent are from Northern Nigeria hence the need to address problem of girl-child education in the North.
