The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has donated empowerment materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Bauchi State.
Distributing the items to IDPs yesterday in Azare, headquarters of Katagum council, the NCFRMI Federal Commissioner, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, said that the donation of the empowerment materials was part of the commission’s responsibility to ensure that durable solutions are found for persons and communities displaced by conflicts, man-made and natural disasters.
She said, “The Commission remains fully committed to keying into the recovery plans for the North East as envisioned by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The provision of these materials today therefore does not reflect the totality of our interventions, rather, we wish to demonstrate our support for the Bauchi State government in its effort to provide the necessary social services for IDPs and communities,” she said.
She pointed out that the commission had identified key projects which would contribute to the Psycho-Socio-Economic wellibeing of the IDPs and their host communities through skills acquisition trainings and empowerment of the trainees.
“The identified projects are based on sustainable models and on Mr. President’s vision of local production and consumption such as waste to wealth initiatives and agriculture and agro-processing initiatives and manufacturing,” she added.
Also, Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Audu Sule Katagum, said that the state has witnessed the influx of IDPs which increases its population and overstretched its lean resources over the years.
He noted that unlike in other places, there is no established or formal IDPs camp in the state as they were integrated and living in communities where land is given to them to farm and as well carry out their profession.
He cautioned the IDPs against selling the empowerment items given to them as the Commission’s supervisors will be monitoring their progress.
Also, the Director Relief and Rehabilitation of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Kabiru Yusuf Kobi, commended the commission for the assistance to the IDPs which he said will help in alleviating their sufferings.
Items donated to the IDPs include Grinding Machines, Sewing Machines, Building (Mason) Kits and Fish Farming and preservation kits.
