The National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Owerri Division, on Thursday delivered judgment nullifying all the malicious acts of the Imo State government against pensioners in the state.
The court ordered the immediate payment in full of pensioners in the state.
The matter was instituted pro bono by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Owerri Branch on behalf of Imo pensioners who have been subjected to all manner of humiliation since Rochas Okorocha became governor six years ago.
The governor had unilaterally slashed the pension of retired Imo workers while forcing them to sign that they had collected full payment. Those who refused to sign such documents are denied payment of even the slashed percentage. even at that most of the pensioners had not been paid in more than 24 months.
At other times, government had issued cheques without cash backing, thereby leaving the pensioners vulnerable at the banks.
