The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has alleged the killing of seven persons in Kporghor community, Tai local government area of Rivers State, following recent attacks on them by neighbouring Wakama community in Ogu/Bolo local government area of the state.
MOSOP, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, the state capital yesterday by its publicity secretary, FegaloNsuke, also alleged that several homes, including schools and places of worship have been destroyed by the attackers.
The statement said, “At the time of this release, the people of Kporghor have been driven out of their homes. Sven persons have been confirmed dead and all homes in the community including schools and worship centers have been destroyed.”
The pan-Ogoni group said it is saddened that despite repeated notifications to the state government to take adequate steps to protect the people of Kporghor and other Ogoni communities that have come under attack from their neighbours, the state government has failed to protect those living in the affected communities.
“We are saddened that despite repeated notifications to the government to take adequate steps to protect the people of Kporghor and other communities which have come under attack from their neighbors, the government appear to have been insensitive to this issue and failing in its responsibility to protect the lives of its citizens.
“MOSOP urges the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and the security agencies to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in these Ogoni communities including Kporghor in Tai local government area, Ekporo in Eleme local government area and to ensure the security of other Ogoni communities which have come under attack from their neighbours.”
