Apart from being the daughter of one of the richest men in Nigeria, Florence Otedola, popular as DJ Cuppy, has always had flare for the turntable. She has always loved music and wondered why all the DJs she knew were always men. So when she turned 16, her parents asked her what she wanted as birthday present. And true to her passion, she said she wanted DJ deck.
She literally got the permission of her parents to pursue her ambition to be a DJ. Her mother told her to make sure she is the best. She has supportive parents, who are also her greatest critics.
In case you don’t know, DJ Cuppy is doing her Masters after graduating from Kings College, London, where she studied business and economics. This makes her DJ job more tedious most times.
Her first gig ever was when she was 17. According to her, it was horrible. It was her friend’s birthday with just a dozen guests.
She would be on Youtube for hours, watching other DJs scratching.
In most cases, when disc-jockeying an event, she would find people staring at her, and this makes her feel awkward.
She has had people sabotage her work by unplugging her equipment and heard sarcastic comments from male DJs, who, according to her, feel DJ work is not for females.
Her favourite music at the moment is Shoki.
What Cuppy loves about her job is that it allows her to mix with people, as she loves inspiring people.
