Community threatens to boycott elections in Enugu State over neglect

-

The Agu-Umabor community in Nsukka local government in Enugu State has threatened to boycott the February general elections following its neglect by successive governments.

The community said in a statement after its New Year retreat at the weekend that past governments had failed to keep their pre-election promises to construct a road linking the community with the Enugu-Oturkpo road.

The statement signed by the Convener of the Agu-Umabor Elite Group, Mr Gil Abonyi, said the community was completely cut off from the rest of the world as the only “pathway’’ to the area was threatened by erosion.

“As it is, only motorcycles ply this pathway and this is posing hardships to the people. We are an agrarian community and our produce waste because we cannot access any market outside our community.

“We have made many appeals to the Enugu State Government through its Visit Every Community programme but nothing has been forthcoming.

“We are not going to attend any campaign rallies and we may even boycott the elections if nothing is done. We are tired of politicians’ promises that are never kept in our area,’’ the statement said.

The statement said the proposed road would also serve the people of Opi-Agu and Breme communities as well Mbu in Isi-Uzo local government.

“Our community is the nerve centre of the area and other communities around us depend on this road. The road is no longer passable and we have been incapacitated.

“The people representing us in various offices only come here when it is time for campaign. They abandon us as soon as we vote them into power. This has to stop,’’ it added.

The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Kevin Mamah, could not be reached for his comment. (NAN)
