Large fire displaces hundreds at New Jersey apartment complex

-

A massive fire at a New Jersey mid-rise consumed 175 apartments and displaced up to 400 residents. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The fire broke out around 4:30p.m. Wednesday at the Avalon at Edgewaer, along the Hudson River across from Manhattan. Fire officials haven’t yet determined what caused the blaze or why it spread so quickly.

The blaze shot flames high into the sky, as crews battled to bring it under control.

Because of the time of day when the fire occurred, most residents were away. About 160 residents were taken to a local shelter late Wednesday night, said New Jersey Mayor Michael McPartland.

Early Thursday morning, the fire was still burning — even though crews have been able to contain it. The city shut down schools in the area, and told residents to stay away. The mayor declared a state of emergency.
