It says a lot about the method of elite recruitment and selection in our country that our national legislators are fixated on the unfeasible task of impeaching the president. This time-wasting proposition is coming just a few weeks before the voters will be given the opportunity to decide the fate of the president.
The misuse of parliamentary time is unacceptable. There are, as we know, far too many urgent issues requiring parliamentary attention. In addition, in view of plunging crude oil price and its detrimental effect on the economy, parliament should be in overdrive finding a solution. The impeachment saga is based on self-perpetuity as well as naked self-interest. None of this has anything to do with the good governance of the Nigerian people for which they are paid unacceptable remuneration.
Further, the trivialisation of the process leading to a removal from office of an elected official is fraught with great dangers to a democracy. From the removal of former governor of Kaduna State Balarabe Musa in the Second Republic to its misuse by Obasanjo, the process has been turned into an assault weapon against democracy. In today’s already volatile polity, it could have unintended consequences. This is why it is important to put a stop to the arrant nonsense now!
