70 yrs old man dies in police custody In Ondo

In what look like a drama turned to be real, as A 70 year’s old man, identified as Mr. Gbenga Omolo was found dead in the police cell of Ondo State Police Command.

TheNiche gathered that the deceased died in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oda Road after he was tortured by some policemen of the squad.

 

 

It learnt that Mr. Gbenga Omolo was said to have arrested over his statement made when there was a traffic hold-up at the popular Arakale road Akure, the state capital.

Omolo who was coming through the road when he discovered that it was a car that obstructed the road questioned the driver of the vehicle, not knowing that he was a police officer.

 

 

The policeman was said to have attacked the man and started beating him, a development which later attracted some sympathizers to come to his rescue.

 

 

The situation took another dimension the following day when some policemen attached to SARS mobilised themselves to Amudipe Street in Akure, and started arresting people in the area.

 

A source said that the victim was later arrested by the police numbering about six where he was repairing his car and some people that were sympathises with him were taken to the police station.

 

 

The source added that on getting to the station, the men in charge demanded for N150,000 for his bail which they could not raised at that time.

 

 

On Tuesday morning , it was also gathered, that the branch Chairman of his garage identified as Mr. Muyiwa raised N100,000 for his bail but on getting to the station, the man has been found dead in police custody.

 

 

According to another source, the policemen involved in the act have been arrested and detained at the police headquarters along Igbatoro road Akure.

 

When Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW learnt about the dead of their collague came out to protest who they described as a hard work and gentleman.

 

 

The family of the deceased declined to speak on the issue, saying the state commissioner of police had invited them to his office to discuss the matter.

 

 

It was learnt that the state chapter of NURTW and family of the victim were planning to take the matter to court.

 

 

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the state specialist hospital, Akure.

 

All efforts to reach the State Public Relation Officer of the command, Mr. Wole Ogodo proved abortive as his phone was not reachable as at the time of filling this report.
