54-year-old man docked for alleged voter’s card forgery, theft of cheques

A 54-year-old man, Tajudeen Balogun, was on Thursday charged before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court 2 in Lagos for allegedly forging a temporary voter’s card belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

 

 

Permanent Voter CardsBalogun is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on felony, theft and forgery.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Oluwafemi Adeleye told the court that the accused had on April 13 at about 9.30 a.m. at First Bank premises, Ile-Iwe Bus Stop, Ikotun, committed the offences.

He said the accused wanted to use the card as a means of identification to cash a First Bank cheque for the sum of N50, 000 that he stole from a post office.

 

 

“Balogun stole the cheque that was sent through postal service by Mr Aderanijo Abiola at Kansas, U.S., property of Mr Sanmi Oluwatosin.

 

 

“He stole three First Bank cheques to withdraw N50,000 each with two of the cheques and to withdraw N20,000 with the third cheque.

 

 

“The accused also stole three signed First Bank cheques with total value of NN120, 000 belonging to Aderanijo,’’ he said.

 

 

Adeleye said the offences contravened Sections 285, 361 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

 

 

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. The Magistrate, Mr P. Nwaka, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

 

 

He said that the sureties must be blood relations of the accused.

 

 

The case has been adjourned till May 13 for mention.
