In less than 24 hours, about 46,000 Nigerians have signed a petition asking the police to begin criminal prosecution against the senator, Elisha Abbo who assaulted a nursing mother in Abuja.
Abbo was seen on close circuit television camera raining multiple slaps on a lady for attempting to pacify him while he was threatening the owner of a sex toy shop.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and directed the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to also quiz the policeman who stood aloof and did nothing while the assault was taking place.
Elisha Abbo is the youngest senator Nigeria ever produced after the popular #notTooYoungToRun movement gained traction in the 2019 election.
Daniel Adebayo started the petition to Amnesty International. He argued that Abbo, as the youngest senator in Nigeria, has acted irresponsibly by assaulting a helpless and defenseless nursing mother without provocation.
“As a senator, he is meant to be responsible, protect the right of Nigerians, instead he choose to abuse and molest a defenseless citizen.
“His behaviour is abhorrent, completely unacceptable and totally condemnable.
“I am appealing to Nigerians to help sign this petition, so that he can be prosecuted and brought to justice, as this will serve as a deterrent to others who might want to abuse power and perpetrate similar acts,” he said.
The Petitioner hopes to get 50,000 signatories. It has so far garnered 46,000 signatories in less than 24 hours.
