Dogara proposes international donor conference for IDPs

-

The House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara is proposing an international donor conference for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Dogara is of the view that the donor conference will help alleviate the plight of IDPs mostly in Nigeria’s northeast.

He made the proposition on Sunday during his visit to IDPs at the International Christian Centre in Uhogua, Edo state.

Dogara while presenting relief materials to the centre, called for more support from the private sector for the care of IDPs.

His call is coming days after over 80 world leaders converged on London for the ‘Supporting Syria and the region’ donor conference.

At the event held at the Queen Elizabeth 11 Conference Centre in London, world leaders gathered to rise to the challenge of raising the money needed to help millions of people whose lives have been torn apart by the devastating civil war.

Dogara is seeking a similar support to aid over two million displaced persons in the oil rich nation’s Northeast and also rehabilitate the region that has seen over six years of insurgency.

In June 2015, the Speaker sought aid from the Canadian government and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help address the devastation in the north-east caused by the insurgency.

Dogara said the region was in dire need of assistance to address its challenges.

Boko Haram terrorists are making attempts to establish an Islamic State in the region and also end Western education.

Most of the territories that were occupied by the sect had been reclaimed by troops countering their activities in the region.
