INTERVIEW
In this brief interview, the Governor-elect of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya ‘Fairplus’ Bello, amid very high expectations, assures the people of the state of positive direction in governance as he takes over the state’s mantle of leadership Wednesday.
In your younger days, did you ever imagine yourself as Kogi State governor? Was there any prophesy or any sign to that effect?
There were no prophecies I could recall, but I always believe that with God by his side, a man can achieve whatever he sets his mind to do.
You made it to the Government House at the first shot. What gave you the confidence you would make it and why did you consider going for governorship instead of a lower position like membership of the National Assembly?
I believe in my will to achieve anything I do. I therefore went for the seat because I feel it will enable me achieve the change my great state has been longing for.
What difference should Kogi people expect from you within your first 500 days in office?
My fellow kogites should expect a new and positive direction in the way the affairs of the state will be handled.
There are many challenges confronting your state; can you be specific on the areas you intend to tackle within the next four years?
These can be found in the blueprint which this administration intends to abide by.
Considering the dwindling fortunes in the state’s economy, how do you intend to finance these projects?
One of our focus will be internally generated revenue. This, we believe, will cushion the depleting federal allocation and allow us to complete our projects
It was alleged that you worked for the PDP during the November 21, 2015 governorship election. If this is true, why did you do that?
I heard a lot of comments about my intentions and my reputation. I and my team have chosen to ignore politically-instigated rumours.
Are you going to follow the president’s steps in respect of the ongoing probe at the centre by probing your predecessor?
My administration is focused on developing our great state. This is our focus for now.
Captain Wada is still contesting your emergence, in court. How confident are you that you will serve out your term?
As mentioned earlier, I refuse to be distracted by external events. My focus is to change this state, and that I intend to focus on, so help me God.
Are you going to make an upward review of civil servants’ salaries slashed by your predecessor?
This is a matter which my team and I are still looking into.
What is your relationship with the family members of your benefactor, the late Prince Abubakar Audu?
I have been and I’m still in touch with the family of the late Prince Abubakar Audu.
