2017 NNPC/Shell Cup moves to zonal preliminaries

This year’s NNPC/Shell Cup football championship moves to the zonal preliminaries from Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 18.
According to the championship director, Shola Akinwale, the zonal preliminaries would hold at nine different cities across the country with the qualified teams going to the quarterfinals.
“Once the zonal preliminaries is concluded, the quarterfinalists would move to the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode for hostilities to decide which teams go the semifinals.
“The semifinals would hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Wednesday, June 27 while the third place and final match will hold at the same venue on Friday, June 29’, Akinwale said.
Meanwhile, a total of N8.2m will be up for grabs by winners of this year’s NNPC/Shell Cup football championship, which is the 19th edition.
The first place winner will get N3.5m; second place winner to get N2.3m; third place winner to get N1.3m while the fourth place winner will get N1.1m.
The money will be towards the development of sports facilities in the top four schools at the end of the championship.
General Manager, External Relations, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria Limited, Mr. Igo Weli disclosed this in Lagos on Wednesday during the unfolding plans for this year’s championship.
Weli, who was represented by Manager, Non-technical crew of the SPDC, Mr. Banji Adekoya, said in addition, two Most Valuable Players (MVPs) will be sent to Netherlands for coaching with Feyenoord Rotterdam Youth Academy.
According to him, on completion of their secondary education, the top 10 talents at the end of the championship will be eligible to compete for NNPC/Shell University Undergraduate Scholarships.
Akinwale said there would be coaching clinics for the four schools that get to the semifinals in Lagos. “The coaching clinics will be conducted by Feyenoord Rotterdam’s Youth Academy from the Netherlands at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos from Saturday, June 24 to Tuesday, June 26.
Since its inception, the championship has been a permanent event in the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) calendar earning the tagged name: “All Nigeria Secondary Schools Football Championship”.
