A viral video circulating on social media on Wednesday captured students of the Delta State School of Nursing rejecting Nigeriaโ€™s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as their โ€œmotherโ€ during her visit to the state.

Oluremi Tinubu was in Delta State as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative project. During her visit, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori praised her efforts, stating that the nation was experiencing a significant transformation in the health sector.

He commended the First Lady for her dedication to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, citing the impact of RHI since its inception in 2023.

As part of the event, professional kits were presented to the wives of South-South governors, who serve as RHI coordinators in their respective states.

The First Lady also visited the Traditional Rulersโ€™ Council Chambers, where she met with monarchs, including the Orodje of Okpe, retired Major General Felix Mujak Peruo.

However, a moment from the event sparked widespread social media reactions.

In the viral clip, the eventโ€™s Master of Ceremony introduced Oluremi Tinubu as โ€œeveryoneโ€™s mother,โ€ a common title for First Ladies.

The nursing students, however, refused to accept this designation.

When the MC declared, โ€œNa our mama be thisโ€ (translated as โ€œThis is our motherโ€), the students responded in unison, โ€œNa your mama be thisโ€ (translated as โ€œThis is your motherโ€), signalling their rejection of the title.

While the studentsโ€™ exact reason for rejecting the First Lady as their โ€œmotherโ€ remains unclear, the incident comes amid widespread discontent over the economic hardship and insecurity plaguing Nigeria under President Bola Tinubuโ€™s administration.

Many Nigerians have voiced frustration over rising living costs, food scarcity, and other economic challenges.
